Exams
Well exam - A well exam is a general exam with the doctor on a healthy animal. Many times these are necessary to refill a prescription like heartworm preventative to ensure proper doctor/client/patient relationship has been established.

Medical exam - A traditional medical exam is done when your animal has specific medical problem we are addressing. These are more involved than a well exam.

TCVM (Traditional Chinese VeterinaryMedicine) Initial Appointment - These appointments are approx. 1 hour long and are very involved.Consulting on very specific problems and how Dr. Van Tine will be treating them

TCVM Re-Check Appointment - These appointments are about 30-45 minutes long and allow for Dr. Van Tine to examine your animal and touch base with you about your animal’s progress.

Canine Vaccines
DHPP – 5in1 (1 year) - Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvo Virus, andParainfluenza

DHPP – 5in1 (3 year) - Same as above but, labeled for 3 years. This allows for fewer vaccines given to your animal every year.

DHLPP – 6in1 (1 year) - Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parvo Virus, and Parainfluenza. This is given if your pet has exposure to wildlife urine since that is the carrier for Leptospirosis.

Leptospirosis – (1 year) - We will vaccinate with this vaccine if a DHPP (3 year) is given but your pet has exposure to wildlife urine.

Rabies vaccine- (1 or 3 years) -  The first Rabies vaccine that is given is good for 1 year every one after that is good for 3 years. This vaccination is required by all counties in California.

Bordetella– (6 months) - This vaccine for kennel cough should be given for animals that are boarding, go to the groomer, dog parks, etc.

Rattlesnake Vaccine (6 months) This is a two or three shot series to get them started [it depends on the weight of the animal] and is given at the beginning of rattlesnake season. This vaccine lessons the reaction of the dogs’ body to the snake’s venom. While treatment must still be sought, the chance of survival is greatly increased.

Feline Vaccines
FVRCP – 3in1- (1 year) - Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia. This vaccine is also known as the “feline distemper” vaccine.

Feline Leukemia-(1 year) - This vaccine is given to cats’ that have frequent exposure to other cats and there is the potential for the exchange of body fluids. For example, mutual grooming, food bowls, fighting, etc.

Feline Rabies Vaccine – (3 year) - This vaccine has been around the longest. However, there is a chance for a vaccine associated carcinoma(a type of cancer) at the injection site, believed to be caused by the preservatives (adjuvant) in the vaccine. We highly recommend the Pure Vax Rabies for all cats.

Feline Pure Vax Rabies –(1 year) - This is the safest Rabies vaccine due to the lack of adjuvant (preservative). Rabies vaccine without the adjuvant that the 3 year vaccine has puts your animal at less risk of the development of vaccine associated carcinoma.

Other Tests and Services
Fecal Test - This is a stool test most commonly done on puppies/kittens, however it can be done on any age animal, to test for intestinal parasites like roundworm, hookworm, whipworm, coccidia. This test is required once yearly for use of our boarding services and recommended annually as part of a wellness program.

Giardia Test - This is a stool test that is done to test for giardia. Giardia is an intestinal protozoan that is transmissible to humans. It is most commonly found in stagnant water. This test is required once yearly for use of our boarding services and recommended annually as part of a wellness program.

Heartworm/Lymes/Ehrlichia Test - This is blood test done in the hospital to test for heartworm. Heartworm is past by mosquitos and lives in the heart. It can cause congestive heart failure if undetected. A monthly preventative is available. A yearly exam and test is required since the medicine is a prescription. This test also tests for Lymes and Ehrlichia which are tick borne illnesses that can be very harmful to your dog if left undetected.

Microchip - This is an implant about the size of a grain of rice that is injected under the skin and between the shoulder blades on an animal.The microchip allows for permanent identification for your pet in case they get lost or stolen.

FELV/FIV/HWTest - This test looks for Feline Leukemia/Feline AIDS/Heartworm. Feline Leukemia and FIV are passed by the exchange of body fluids i.e.: mutual grooming, fighting, sharing food bowls. Cats can also be born with these diseases so testing stray cats and kittens is smart preventative medicine.
 

Dental Specials
Dental exams and dentals are recommended to prevent complications of poor dental health. Chronic dental and periodontal disease can lead to heart, kidney, and liver problems.This has a negative impact on your pet’s comfort and ability to eat.

Folsom Veterinary Hospital’s dental specials include: anesthetic, dental cleaning and ultrasonic scaling, fluoride treatment, monitoring, antibiotic injection, nail trim and ear exam.

Folsom Veterinary Hospital believes that spaying/neutering pets is a valuable service to the community and therefore does them for a discounted cost. Spaying/neutering you pet is important for your animal’s health.In addition to preventing unwanted pregnancies for your pets, prevention of testicular cancer, prostate problems, mammary tumors, and pyometra (infected uterus) are all problems that can be fatal and in many cases, can be completely prevented by a simple and inexpensive surgery.

All animals that are here for spay/neuter are kept overnight. This is a charge that is included in the price and is in the best interest of your pet. Keeping them overnight allows for one night of complete cage rest and to make sure all animals are urinating, defecating, eating, drinking and not chewing on their sutures before they go home. In addition, we check their ears and trim their nails while they are under anesthesia at no charge.
